Vial is a small glass or plastic vessel or bottle, often used to store medication as liquids, powders or capsules. They can also be used as scientific sample vessels; for instance, in autosampler devices in analytical chromatography.
Types of Vials[edit]
Vial types can be categorized based on their closure system, the most common types being the Screw cap and Crimp cap vials.
Screw Cap Vials[edit]
Screw cap vials are closed by screwing the cap down onto the threads of the vial. Screw cap vials are most often used when the vial needs to be sealed tightly.
Crimp Cap Vials[edit]
Crimp cap vials require a tool to seal the cap onto the vial and another tool to remove it. This type of vial is often used when a tamper evident seal is necessary.
Uses of Vials[edit]
Vials are commonly used in laboratories for storing samples, for instance in the field of chromatography. They are also used in the medical field for storing medications, such as vaccines and insulin.
