Spermarche is the beginning of development of sperm in boys' testicles at puberty. It is the counterpart to a girl's first menstruation (menarche).
Overview
Spermarche generally occurs between the ages of 11 and 15. The first few batches of sperm often contain few active sperm. The first ejaculation of seminal fluid generally occurs about one year after the beginning of accelerated penis growth, although this is often determined culturally rather than biologically.
Signs and Symptoms
The signs and symptoms of spermarche are not as obvious as those of menarche in girls. The first sign of spermarche is usually the presence of seminal fluid upon waking up (nocturnal emission), although some boys may notice the fluid after urinating.
Causes
Spermarche is caused by the onset of puberty, which is triggered by the release of hormones from the brain (hypothalamus and pituitary gland). These hormones stimulate the testicles to produce testosterone, which in turn stimulates the production of sperm.
Treatment
There is no specific treatment for spermarche as it is a normal part of puberty. However, boys may need reassurance and education about this normal part of development.
