St-Viateur Bagel[edit]

St-Viateur Bagel is a world-renowned bagel bakery located in the heart of Montreal, Quebec, Canada. It is named after its location on St-Viateur Street in the city's Mile End neighbourhood. The bakery was founded in 1957 by Myer Lewkowicz, a survivor of the Holocaust who immigrated to Montreal with his family after World War II.

History[edit]

Myer Lewkowicz founded St-Viateur Bagel in 1957. He was a survivor of the Buchenwald concentration camp and came to Montreal after the war. Lewkowicz learned the art of bagel-making at a bakery in the city's Jewish neighbourhood before deciding to open his own shop. The bakery quickly became a staple in the Mile End community and has since grown into a Montreal institution.

Bagels[edit]

St-Viateur Bagel is famous for its Montreal-style bagels, which are smaller, denser, and sweeter than their New York counterparts. They are boiled in honey-infused water before being baked in a wood-fired oven, giving them a distinctive taste and texture. The bakery offers a variety of flavours, including sesame, poppy seed, cinnamon raisin, and more.

Influence and Recognition[edit]

St-Viateur Bagel has received numerous accolades for its bagels. It has been featured in various media outlets, including The New York Times, The Guardian, and CBC. The bakery is also a popular destination for tourists visiting Montreal.

Locations[edit]

In addition to its original location on St-Viateur Street, the bakery has several other locations throughout Montreal. Each location maintains the same traditional bagel-making methods that have made St-Viateur Bagel a beloved institution.
