Hawaii is the 50th and most recent state to have joined the United States, having received statehood on August 21, 1959. Hawaii is the only U.S. state located in Oceania and the only one composed entirely of islands. It is the northernmost island group in Polynesia, occupying most of an archipelago in the central Pacific Ocean.

Geography[edit]

Hawaii is an archipelago made up of eight major islands, several atolls, numerous smaller islets, and undersea seamounts in the North Pacific Ocean. The eight main islands are, in order from northwest to southeast: Niihau, Kauai, Oahu, Molokai, Lanai, Kahoolawe, Maui, and the Island of Hawaii.

Climate[edit]

Hawaii's climate is typical for the tropics, although temperatures and humidity tend to be less extreme because of near-constant trade winds from the east. Summer highs usually reach around 88 °F (31 °C) during the day, with the temperature reaching a low of 75 °F (24 °C) at night. Winter day temperatures usually range from 78 °F (26 °C) to 82 °F (28 °C).

Health in Hawaii[edit]

Hawaii has the highest life expectancy in the United States, with residents living an average of 81.3 years. The state's healthcare system is well-regarded, with several notable hospitals and medical centers. The John A. Burns School of Medicine, part of the University of Hawaii system, is a leader in medical education and research.

Economy[edit]

Hawaii's economy is mainly based on tourism, defense, and agriculture. The state's agricultural outputs include nursery stock, coffee, macadamia nuts, and pineapples. Hawaii also has a significant military presence, with several major military bases located on the islands.

Culture[edit]

Hawaii is known for its diverse culture, which is a blend of Native Hawaiian, East Asian, and North American influences. The state is famous for its traditional Hawaiian music, hula dance, and Hawaiian language, which is one of the state's two official languages along with English.
