Eye surgery also known as ocular surgery, is surgery performed on the eye or its adnexa, typically by an ophthalmologist.
Types of Eye Surgery[edit]
There are several types of eye surgeries including:
- Refractive surgery
- Cataract surgery
- Glaucoma surgery
- Canaloplasty
- Corneal surgery
- Vitreo-retinal surgery
- Eye muscle surgery
- Oculoplastic surgery
- Eyelid surgery
- Orbital surgery
- Other oculoplastic surgery
Refractive Surgery[edit]
Refractive surgery aims to correct the refractive error of the eye. This type of surgery uses a laser to reshape the cornea, improving the eye's ability to focus. The most common types of refractive surgery include LASIK and PRK.
Cataract Surgery[edit]
Cataract surgery involves the removal of the natural lens of the eye that has developed an opacification, or cataract. The success rate of cataract surgery is generally high, with improved vision, decreased dependence on eyeglasses, and prevention of blindness.
Glaucoma Surgery[edit]
Glaucoma surgery is used to reduce the pressure within the eye for patients with glaucoma. There are several types of glaucoma surgeries including trabeculectomy, laser trabeculoplasty, and tube-shunt surgery.
Canaloplasty[edit]
Canaloplasty is a nonpenetrating procedure designed to enhance drainage through the eye's natural drainage system to provide sustained reduction of intraocular pressure in patients with glaucoma.
Corneal Surgery[edit]
Corneal surgery includes procedures like corneal transplant surgery, keratoplasty, penetrating keratoplasty, and phototherapeutic keratectomy.
Vitreo-retinal Surgery[edit]
Vitreo-retinal surgery includes surgeries to treat disorders related to the retina, vitreous and macula, including retinal detachment, macular hole, and epiretinal membrane.
Eye Muscle Surgery[edit]
Eye muscle surgery is performed to correct strabismus, also known as crossed eyes, which is a condition in which the eyes do not properly align with each other when looking at an object.
Oculoplastic Surgery[edit]
Oculoplastic surgery, or oculoplastics, is the subspecialty of ophthalmology that deals with the reconstruction of the eye and associated structures. It includes eyelid surgery, orbital surgery, and other types of surgery.
Eyelid Surgery[edit]
Eyelid surgery or blepharoplasty, is a procedure to remove fat, along with excess skin and muscle from the upper and lower eyelids.
Orbital Surgery[edit]
Orbital surgery is surgery of the eye socket, whether it be for a tumor, trauma, or other disorders.
Other Oculoplastic Surgery[edit]
Other types of oculoplastic surgery can include surgery of the lacrimal system and cosmetic surgery.
