EssilorLuxottica is a multinational corporation that specializes in the design, manufacture, and distribution of ophthalmic lenses, frames, and sunglasses. The company was formed in 2018 through the merger of Essilor and Luxottica.
History[edit]
Essilor was a French company founded in 1849 as an ophthalmic optical retail network, which expanded into lenses manufacturing in 1965 under the name Essel. Luxottica was an Italian company, with an international retail network including brands such as LensCrafters, Sunglass Hut, and Pearle Vision.
In 2018, Essilor and Luxottica merged to form EssilorLuxottica, creating a global leader in the design, manufacture, and distribution of ophthalmic lenses, frames, and sunglasses.
Operations[edit]
EssilorLuxottica operates in three main segments: lenses and optical instruments, frames and sunglasses, and retail. The company has a presence in more than 150 countries and employs over 150,000 people worldwide.
Products[edit]
EssilorLuxottica's product portfolio includes prescription frames and sunglasses under various brands such as Ray-Ban, Oakley, and Persol, as well as lenses and optical instruments.
Controversies[edit]
In 2019, a governance dispute arose between the French and Italian factions within the company, leading to legal proceedings and a drop in the company's share price.
