SweeTango[edit]
SweeTango is a brand of apple that is a hybrid of two other apple varieties, the Honeycrisp and the Zestar. It was developed by the University of Minnesota's apple breeding program and is known for its crisp texture and sweet-tart flavor.
History[edit]
The University of Minnesota's apple breeding program began developing the SweeTango in the late 1990s. The goal was to create an apple that combined the best qualities of the Honeycrisp and Zestar varieties. After years of careful cultivation and testing, the SweeTango was released to the public in 2009.
Characteristics[edit]
The SweeTango apple is known for its unique flavor profile. It has a sweet-tart taste that is often described as having notes of honey, citrus, and spice. The apple's texture is also notable. Like the Honeycrisp, the SweeTango has a very crisp and juicy texture.
Cultivation[edit]
SweeTango apples are grown in several regions in the United States, including Minnesota, Washington, and New York. They are typically harvested in late August and early September. The apples are then stored in controlled atmosphere storage to maintain their freshness until they are ready to be sold.
Usage[edit]
SweeTango apples are versatile and can be used in a variety of culinary applications. They are excellent for eating fresh out of hand, but they can also be used in baking, salads, and sauces. Their sweet-tart flavor and crisp texture make them a popular choice for apple pies and tarts.
Availability[edit]
SweeTango apples are typically available from September through December. They are sold in grocery stores and farmers markets across the United States and Canada.
