Lingual refers to something that is related to the tongue. It is a term used in various fields of study including anatomy, linguistics, and dentistry.

Anatomy[edit]

In anatomy, the term lingual is used to refer to parts that are close to or on the side of the tongue. For example, the lingual artery is a blood vessel that supplies blood to the tongue. The lingual nerve is a branch of the mandibular nerve (the third division of the trigeminal nerve) that supplies sensory innervation to the tongue.

Linguistics[edit]

In linguistics, lingual consonants or linguals are consonants that are articulated with the tongue. They include alveolars, dentals, and different types of sibilants.

Dentistry[edit]

In dentistry, lingual refers to the side of the teeth that faces the tongue. The lingual surface of the teeth is the side that comes into contact with the tongue. Lingual braces are a type of orthodontic treatment where the braces are bonded to the lingual surface of the teeth.
