The idea was inspired by the lack of a physical museum dedicated to the vagina, despite the existence of a Phallological Museum in Iceland. Schechter began by organizing pop-up events and exhibitions to gauge public interest and support for a permanent museum.
In 2019, the Vagina Museum opened its first physical location in Camden Market, London. The museum's inaugural exhibition, "Muff Busters: Vagina Myths and How To Fight Them," aimed to dispel common myths and misconceptions about the vagina and vulva.
