Cockspur Rum is a rum brand that originated in Barbados, a country known for its rich history of rum production. The brand is named after the island's national bird, the Cockspur, which is featured prominently on the label.
History[edit]
Cockspur Rum was established in 1884 by Valdemar Hanschell, a Danish seafarer and ship chandler. Hanschell's business thrived in the bustling port of Bridgetown, where sailors would often stop to resupply their ships and purchase local rum. Recognizing the demand for high-quality rum, Hanschell founded the Cockspur Rum Company, which quickly gained a reputation for producing some of the finest rums in the Caribbean.
Production[edit]
Cockspur Rum is produced at the West Indies Rum Distillery, one of the oldest operating distilleries in the Caribbean. The rum is made from molasses, a byproduct of sugar production, and is aged in American oak barrels to develop its distinctive flavor. The distillery uses a combination of traditional pot stills and modern column stills to produce a variety of rums, ranging from light and smooth to rich and full-bodied.
Products[edit]
Cockspur Rum offers a range of products, including:
- Cockspur Fine Rum: A light, golden rum that is aged for a minimum of two years. It is known for its smooth, mellow flavor and is often used in cocktails.
- Cockspur VSOR (Very Special Old Reserve): A premium rum that is aged for a minimum of 12 years. It is characterized by its rich, complex flavor and is often enjoyed neat or on the rocks.
- Cockspur Overproof Rum: A high-proof rum that is popular in Barbados and other Caribbean countries. It is often used in traditional Caribbean dishes and drinks.
Awards and Recognition[edit]
Cockspur Rum has received numerous awards for its quality and craftsmanship, including gold medals at the International Wine and Spirit Competition and the San Francisco World Spirits Competition.
