Windows Phone 8.1 is a mobile operating system developed by Microsoft as the successor to Windows Phone 8. It was announced at Microsoft's Build Conference in April 2014 and released to developers as a preview on April 14, 2014. The update was made available to all Windows Phone 8 devices.

Features[edit]

Windows Phone 8.1 introduced several new features and improvements over its predecessor:

Cortana: A new virtual assistant similar to Apple's Siri and Google Now. Cortana can perform tasks such as setting reminders, recognizing natural voice commands, and providing information from the web.

Action Center: A notification center that provides quick access to settings and notifications from apps.

Word Flow Keyboard: A swipe-based keyboard that allows users to type by sliding their finger across the screen.

Internet Explorer 11: An updated version of the web browser with improved performance and new features.

VPN Support: Enhanced security features including support for virtual private networks.

Wi-Fi Sense: A feature that automatically connects to free Wi-Fi hotspots and shares Wi-Fi credentials with contacts.

Development Tools[edit]

Windows Phone 8.1 was accompanied by updates to the Visual Studio development environment, allowing developers to create universal apps that could run on both Windows Phone and Windows 8.1 devices.

Discontinuation[edit]

Support for Windows Phone 8.1 ended on July 11, 2017, as Microsoft shifted its focus to Windows 10 Mobile.
