Dollond & Aitchison is a historic British retail optician and hearing aid company, which was established in 1750. The company was known for its extensive range of glasses, contact lenses, and other optical services. It was one of the oldest optical companies in the world before it merged with Boots Opticians in 2009.
History[edit]
Dollond & Aitchison was founded by Peter Dollond, the son of a Huguenot refugee, in 1750. The company was originally based in Vine Street, Hatton Garden, London. In 1761, Dollond was joined by his brother, John Dollond, and the company became known as Dollond & Dollond. The company was renamed Dollond & Aitchison in 1927, following a merger with one of its main competitors, Aitchison & Co.
Products and Services[edit]
Dollond & Aitchison offered a wide range of optical products and services. These included prescription glasses, sunglasses, contact lenses, and hearing aids. The company also provided eye tests and hearing tests, as well as advice on eye health and hearing health.
Merger with Boots Opticians[edit]
In 2009, Dollond & Aitchison merged with Boots Opticians, creating the second-largest optical chain in the UK. The merger resulted in the rebranding of all Dollond & Aitchison stores to Boots Opticians.
Legacy[edit]
Despite the merger, the Dollond & Aitchison name lives on in the form of the Dollond & Aitchison Lens Manufacturing Laboratory in Birmingham, which continues to produce high-quality lenses for Boots Opticians.
