Polystichum richardii is a species of fern in the family Dryopteridaceae. It is native to New Zealand, where it is commonly known as Richard's Holly Fern or Richard's Shield Fern.

Description[edit]

Polystichum richardii is an evergreen fern that grows up to 1.5 meters in height. The fronds are dark green, glossy, and leathery, with a holly-like appearance. The sori (clusters of sporangia, or spore-producing structures) are located on the underside of the fronds and are covered by a peltate indusium (a shield-like structure that protects the developing spores).

Distribution and habitat[edit]

Polystichum richardii is endemic to New Zealand, where it is found throughout the country, from sea level to subalpine areas. It grows in a variety of habitats, including forests, scrubland, and rocky areas.

Cultivation[edit]

Polystichum richardii is cultivated as an ornamental plant for its attractive, holly-like fronds. It is a hardy fern that can tolerate a range of conditions, but prefers a shady location with well-drained soil.

Conservation status[edit]

Polystichum richardii is not considered to be at risk in the wild. However, like all native plants in New Zealand, it is protected under the New Zealand Native Plants Protection Act.
