Disabled Peoples' International (DPI) is a global organization committed to the protection of the rights of persons with disabilities and the promotion of their full and equal participation in society. Established in 1981, DPI is represented through active membership in over 130 countries worldwide.
History[edit]
DPI was established in 1981, during the International Year of Disabled Persons, declared by the United Nations. The organization was created by people with disabilities, for people with disabilities, with the aim of representing their rights at an international level.
Structure[edit]
DPI is a network of national organizations, regional organizations, and individual members. The organization is governed by a World Council, which is elected by member organizations every four years at the World Assembly. The World Council includes representatives from each of the eight DPI regions: Africa, Arab, Asia-Pacific, CIS, Europe, Latin America, North America and the Caribbean.
Objectives[edit]
DPI's main objectives include promoting the human rights of people with disabilities, enhancing their participation in development efforts at all levels, and strengthening the capacity of its member organizations. DPI works towards these objectives through advocacy, lobbying, education, research, and awareness-raising activities.
Activities[edit]
DPI's activities are diverse and wide-ranging. They include advocating for the rights of people with disabilities at the international level, promoting the implementation of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, and supporting the capacity-building of its member organizations. DPI also organizes international conferences and events, and participates in various international forums related to disability rights.
Impact[edit]
DPI has had a significant impact on the global disability rights movement. It has played a key role in the drafting and adoption of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, and continues to be a leading voice in advocating for the rights of people with disabilities worldwide.
