Lucozade is a British brand of soft drink manufactured and marketed by the Japanese company Suntory. First produced by pharmacist William Walker Hunter in 1927, it was originally marketed as a health drink for aiding recovery from common illnesses such as colds or influenza. Today, Lucozade is primarily marketed as an energy and sports drink.
History[edit]
William Walker Hunter, a Newcastle pharmacist, first developed Lucozade in 1927. The drink was initially known as "Glucozade" and was designed to provide a quick source of energy for those who were ill. In 1938, the name was changed to Lucozade, and the product was sold in a cellophane-wrapped glass bottle to give it a medical image.
In 1953, the Beecham Group acquired the Lucozade brand. The company began to market the drink as a source of energy for athletes, and by the 1980s, it had become a popular sports and energy drink. In 1989, the brand was acquired by SmithKline Beecham, which later merged with GlaxoSmithKline in 2000. In 2013, Suntory purchased the brand as part of a deal with GlaxoSmithKline.
Products[edit]
Lucozade offers a range of products, including Lucozade Energy, Lucozade Sport, and Lucozade Revive. Lucozade Energy is a carbonated drink that provides glucose and caffeine for a quick energy boost. Lucozade Sport is a still drink designed for athletes, providing carbohydrates and electrolytes to enhance hydration and performance. Lucozade Revive is a lightly sparkling, revitalising drink with vitamins B3, B5, B6, and B12 to help reduce tiredness and fatigue.
Marketing[edit]
Lucozade has been associated with sports and physical activity through its marketing campaigns. The brand has sponsored various sporting events and athletes, including the London Marathon and footballer Gareth Bale. Its advertising campaigns have often featured the tagline "Lucozade aids recovery".
