Rangamati is a district in southeastern Bangladesh. It is a part of the Chittagong Division and the town of Rangamati serves as the headquarters of the district. The district is known for its diverse population, with the Chakma, Marma, Tanchangya, Tripuri, Pankho, Lushai, Khyang, and Murang ethnic groups residing here.

Geography[edit]

Rangamati is located in the Chittagong Division. It is bordered by the Tripura state of India to the north, Bandarban District to the south, Mizoram, a state of India, to the east, and Khagrachhari District and Chittagong District to the west.

History[edit]

The history of Rangamati is closely tied to the history of the Chittagong Hill Tracts. The area was a part of the ancient Samatata kingdom of the Bengal. It came under the control of the British Empire in 1860 and was made a part of the Chittagong Hill Tracts District.

Demographics[edit]

The district has a diverse population, with the Chakma being the largest ethnic group. Other ethnic groups include the Marma, Tanchangya, Tripuri, Pankho, Lushai, Khyang, and Murang.

Economy[edit]

The economy of Rangamati is primarily based on agriculture, with the main crops being paddy, corn, cotton, and vegetables. The district is also known for its handicrafts, particularly its handloom products and homemade cigars.

Education[edit]

There are several educational institutions in Rangamati, including Rangamati Government College, Rangamati Science and Technology University, and Rangamati Medical College.
