VectorBase is a bioinformatics resource for invertebrate vectors of human pathogens. It provides a web-accessible data repository for information about genome sequences, functional genomics and population genetics. VectorBase is one of the Bioinformatics Resource Centers funded by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) and is managed by an international consortium of scientists dedicated to advancing research into vector-borne diseases.
Overview[edit]
VectorBase was established in 2004 with the goal of providing a central hub for the collection, curation and dissemination of data on invertebrate vectors of human diseases. The resource includes genome sequence data, gene expression data, population genetics data and other types of data relevant to vector biology. VectorBase also provides a suite of bioinformatics tools for the analysis and visualization of these data.
Data and Tools[edit]
VectorBase includes data on a wide range of invertebrate vectors of human pathogens, including mosquitoes, ticks, sand flies, and other arthropods. The data is organized into several categories:
- Genome Sequences: VectorBase includes genome sequences for a number of invertebrate vectors. These sequences are annotated with gene predictions and functional information.
- Functional Genomics: VectorBase includes data on gene expression, protein interactions, and other aspects of functional genomics.
- Population Genetics: VectorBase includes data on genetic variation within and between populations of invertebrate vectors.
In addition to the data, VectorBase provides a number of bioinformatics tools for data analysis and visualization. These tools include genome browsers, sequence alignment tools, and tools for comparative genomics.

VectorBase is managed by an international consortium of scientists. The consortium includes researchers from a wide range of disciplines, including genomics, bioinformatics, vector biology, and infectious disease research. The consortium works together to curate and update the data in VectorBase, and to develop new tools and resources for the research community.
