Renal capsule is a tough fibrous layer surrounding the kidney and covered in a layer of perirenal fat known as the adipose capsule. The renal capsule provides some protection from trauma and damage. The renal capsule is almost transparent and is a barrier against the spread of infections to the kidney.
Structure[edit]
The renal capsule is a tough and fibrous layer that surrounds the kidney. It is covered in a layer of perirenal fat known as the adipose capsule. The renal capsule is almost transparent and is a barrier against the spread of infections to the kidney. The capsule is made up of dense, irregular connective tissue that is rich in collagen and elastin fibers. These fibers give the capsule its strength and elasticity.
Function[edit]
The primary function of the renal capsule is to provide a rigid support structure for the kidney. It helps to protect the kidney from trauma and damage. The renal capsule also acts as a barrier against the spread of infections to the kidney. It helps to maintain the shape of the kidney and provides a secure environment for the delicate structures within the kidney.
Clinical significance[edit]
In certain medical conditions, the renal capsule may become inflamed or damaged. This can lead to a range of symptoms, including pain, blood in the urine, and a decrease in kidney function. In severe cases, damage to the renal capsule can lead to kidney failure.
