Orval Brewery

The Orval Brewery is a Belgian brewery located within the walls of the Abbey of Notre-Dame d'Orval in the Gaume region of Belgium. The brewery produces two Trappist beers, Orval and Orval Green.

History

The Orval Brewery was founded in 1931, with the first beer being distributed to the public in 1932. The brewery was established to finance the enormous reconstruction works of Orval. It has hired lay workers from its inception, considering that the Rule of St. Benedict encourages monks to live by the work of their hands.

Beers

The brewery produces two beers, both of which are considered Trappist beers.

Orval

Orval is a 6.2% ABV beer which is produced all year round. It is brewed with two types of malt, two varieties of hops, candy sugar, water, and yeast. The beer is then dry hopped and fermented in the bottle.

Orval Green

Orval Green (Vert) is a 4.5% ABV beer which is only brewed for and available at the Orval Abbey. It is a lighter version of the traditional Orval beer.

Brewing Process

The brewing process at the Orval Brewery is unique and involves several stages. The water used in the brewing process is drawn from two sources and is then mixed with the malt in the mash tun. The mixture is then filtered and boiled with hops and candy sugar. The wort is then cooled and yeast is added for the primary fermentation. The beer is then dry hopped and a secondary fermentation takes place in the bottle.

Distribution

The Orval Brewery distributes its beer both domestically and internationally. The beer is available in many countries, including the United States, United Kingdom, and Australia.
