McVitie's is a British snack food brand owned by United Biscuits. The name McVitie's has been associated with a variety of biscuits and snacks, including the popular Digestive, Jaffa Cakes, and Hobnob biscuits.
History[edit]
McVitie's was established in 1830 in Edinburgh, Scotland by Robert McVitie, as a provision shop. His son, Alexander Grant, joined the company in 1880 and created the recipe for the original digestive biscuit. The company moved to various sites in the city before completing the St. Andrews Biscuit Works factory on Robertson Avenue in the Gorgie district in 1888.
Products[edit]
McVitie's produces a range of popular snack foods. Some of the most well-known products include:
- Digestive biscuits: A semi-sweet biscuit known for its distinctive texture and flavor. It was first developed in 1892 by Alexander Grant.
- Jaffa Cakes: A biscuit-sized cake introduced by McVitie and Price in 1927, and named after the Jaffa oranges that flavor its tangy jelly center.
- Hobnobs: A brand of commercial biscuits. They are made from rolled oats and jumbo oats, similar to a flapjack-digestive biscuit hybrid, and are among the most popular British biscuits.
Ownership[edit]
In 1948, McVitie's became a part of United Biscuits (UB), a leading international manufacturer of biscuits, snacks and cakes. UB was formed following the merger of two Scottish family businesses – McVitie & Price and MacFarlane Lang.
