Piblokto or Pibloktoq (also known as Arctic hysteria) is a culture-bound syndrome, which is a psychological disorder that is only considered a disorder in certain cultures. Piblokto is most commonly found among the Inuit people living in the Arctic regions of Greenland, Alaska, and Canada. The disorder is characterized by an abrupt outburst of extreme behavior such as screaming, crying, running around, and other uncontrollable actions. These episodes can last anywhere from a few minutes to several hours and are often followed by a period of confusion, fatigue, or amnesia.

Symptoms[edit]

The symptoms of Piblokto can vary greatly from person to person, but they generally include a sudden onset of extreme behavior such as:

Causes[edit]

The exact cause of Piblokto is unknown, but it is believed to be related to the extreme environmental conditions and social stresses experienced by the Inuit people. Some researchers have suggested that it may be a form of conversion disorder, where psychological stress is converted into physical symptoms. Others believe it may be related to vitamin A toxicity, as the Inuit diet is high in vitamin A.

Treatment[edit]

There is no specific treatment for Piblokto. The episodes usually resolve on their own without intervention. However, if the behavior is dangerous to the individual or others, it may be necessary to restrain the person until the episode passes. In some cases, psychotherapy or counseling may be beneficial.
