Zeism is a medical condition that results from the excessive consumption of corn or maize, which is deficient in niacin and tryptophan. This condition is also known as pellagra.
Causes[edit]
Zeism is caused by a diet that is heavily reliant on corn or maize. Corn is deficient in two essential nutrients, niacin and tryptophan. When the body does not receive enough of these nutrients, it can lead to zeism.
Symptoms[edit]
The symptoms of zeism are similar to those of pellagra. They include:
- Dermatitis
- Diarrhea
- Dementia
- Death if not treated
Treatment[edit]
The treatment for zeism involves increasing the intake of niacin and tryptophan. This can be achieved through dietary changes or supplements.
Prevention[edit]
Prevention of zeism involves ensuring a balanced diet that includes sufficient amounts of niacin and tryptophan.
