Guybon Chesney Castell Damant

Guybon Chesney Castell Damant (1881–1948) was a British Royal Navy officer and polar explorer. He is best known for his participation in the British Antarctic Expedition of 1910–1913, also known as the Terra Nova Expedition, led by Robert Falcon Scott.

Early Life

Damant was born on 17 August 1881 in England. He joined the Royal Navy at a young age and quickly rose through the ranks due to his dedication and skill.

Career

In the Royal Navy, Damant served in various capacities, including as a navigator and hydrographer. His work in these roles contributed significantly to the Navy's understanding of the world's oceans.

Terra Nova Expedition

In 1910, Damant was selected to join the Terra Nova Expedition. This expedition, led by Robert Falcon Scott, aimed to be the first to reach the South Pole. Damant served as a navigator and was responsible for charting the expedition's course through the Antarctic waters.

Later Life

After the expedition, Damant continued his career in the Royal Navy. He served during World War I and retired with the rank of Rear Admiral. He passed away on 2 May 1948.

Legacy

Damant's contributions to polar exploration and naval navigation have been recognized by various institutions. The Damant Glacier in Antarctica was named in his honor.
