Basketball is a popular team sport where two teams, usually consisting of five players each, opposing one another on a rectangular court, compete with the primary objective of shooting a basketball (approximately 9.4 inches (24 cm) in diameter) through the defender's hoop (a basket 18 inches (46 cm) in diameter mounted 10 feet (3.048 m) high to a backboard at each end of the court) while preventing the opposing team from shooting through their own hoop.

History[edit]

The game of basketball was invented by Dr. James Naismith, a Canadian physical education instructor who wanted to create a new game to keep his students active during the winter while indoors. This first game was played on December 21, 1891.

Rules and regulations[edit]

Basketball games are governed by a set of rules established by the International Basketball Federation (FIBA). These rules include regulations regarding the court dimensions, equipment, players, and game play.

Health benefits[edit]

Playing basketball has numerous health benefits including cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength, flexibility, and improved mental health.

Injuries[edit]

Basketball players are prone to certain sports injuries such as ankle sprains, knee injuries, and hand injuries. Proper training, use of correct equipment, and following the rules of the game can help prevent these injuries.

Professional basketball[edit]

Professional basketball leagues exist around the world, the most recognized being the National Basketball Association (NBA) in the United States.
