Guadeloupe is an island group located in the eastern Caribbean Sea. It is an overseas region of France, consisting of a single overseas department. The main islands are Basse-Terre, Grande-Terre, Marie-Galante, La Désirade, and the Îles des Saintes.
Geography[edit]
Guadeloupe is located in the Leeward Islands, part of the Lesser Antilles in the Caribbean. The two main islands are Basse-Terre (west) and Grande-Terre (east), which are separated by a narrow strait that is crossed with bridges. The islands are called "the butterfly" due to their shape.
Healthcare in Guadeloupe[edit]
Healthcare in Guadeloupe is of a high standard. The island has hospitals and clinics that provide medical services to the population. The healthcare system is primarily funded by the state through the French Social Security system.
Economy[edit]
The economy of Guadeloupe depends on tourism, agriculture, light industry, and services. It also depends on France for large subsidies and imports.
Culture[edit]
The culture of Guadeloupe is a blend of French, African, and Indian cultures. The most prevalent religions are Roman Catholicism and Hinduism.
History[edit]
Christopher Columbus named the island Santa María de Guadalupe in 1493 after the Virgin Mary, venerated in the Spanish town of Guadalupe.
