Great Britain is an island in the North Atlantic Ocean off the northwest coast of continental Europe. It is the largest of the British Isles, the largest European island, and the ninth-largest island in the world. The island is dominated by a maritime climate with narrow temperature differences between seasons.

Geography[edit]

Great Britain is surrounded by over 1,000 smaller islands and islets. The island is located within the UK's exclusive economic zone and had a 2011 population of about 61 million people, making it the third-most populous island in the world, after Java in Indonesia and Honshu in Japan.

History[edit]

The history of Great Britain is marked by a series of invasions and settlements by various peoples over thousands of years. The island was first inhabited by people who crossed over the land bridge from the European mainland.

Economy[edit]

Great Britain has a diverse and prosperous economy with sectors ranging from agriculture, manufacturing, and services. The economy is dominated by the service sector, which contributes around 80% of GDP.

Culture[edit]

The culture of Great Britain has been shaped by the nation's history, its island status, its demographics and its political system. The culture is influenced by its history as a developed state, a liberal democracy and a great power.
