Internet forum is a online platform where individuals can hold conversations in the form of posted messages. Forums are different from chat rooms where messages are typically one line long and can be temporarily displayed, whereas in forums messages are usually longer and archived. Forums act as centralized locations for topical discussion. The structure of forums can vary depending on the software used, but they generally include categories, subforums, threads, and individual posts.

History[edit]

The concept of the forum dates back to the early days of the internet, with the first forums being simple bulletin board systems (BBS) that were popular in the 1980s and 1990s. These systems allowed users to connect through a dial-up modem to post messages and share files. As the internet evolved, so did forums, transitioning to web-based platforms with more advanced features such as private messaging, user profiles, and various moderation tools.

Structure[edit]

A typical internet forum is organized into a hierarchy starting from the forum, then sub-forums, and within them, threads (or topics) which are made up of individual posts.

  • Forum: The top-level container that may contain several sub-forums on different topics.
  • Sub-forum: A section within a forum dedicated to a specific subject.
  • Thread: A conversation within a sub-forum that includes posts from various users.
  • Post: An individual message written by a user within a thread.

Users register and create profiles to participate in a forum. Each post in a thread is created by a member and can be replied to by other members, creating a conversation. Forums often include a variety of features such as polls, the ability to quote other posts, and the use of emoticons to express emotions.

Moderation[edit]

To maintain order and enforce forum rules, forums are moderated by a staff of moderators and administrators. Moderators have the ability to edit, delete, move, and lock posts and threads. They play a crucial role in keeping discussions civil and on-topic. Administrators have additional powers, including managing user permissions, customizing the forum's appearance, and configuring settings.

Uses[edit]

Internet forums serve a variety of purposes. They can be used for:

  • Technical support for software and hardware products
  • Discussion of hobbies and interests
  • Academic and professional collaboration
  • Support groups for health-related issues
  • General social interaction

Forums can be public, allowing anyone to view posts and participate, or private, requiring registration or invitation to join.

Impact[edit]

Internet forums have had a significant impact on online communication. They have fostered communities around countless topics, enabling people from all over the world to share knowledge, offer support, and discuss interests. However, they can also be a source of controversy, with issues such as cyberbullying, misinformation, and heated debates.
