Slow Food is a global, grassroots organization, founded in 1989 to prevent the disappearance of local food cultures and traditions, counteract the rise of fast life and combat people’s dwindling interest in the food they eat, where it comes from and how our food choices affect the world around us.
History[edit]
Slow Food was started by Carlo Petrini and a group of activists in the 1980s with the initial aim to defend regional traditions, good food, gastronomic pleasure and a slow pace of life. In over two decades of history, the movement has evolved to embrace a comprehensive approach to food that recognizes the strong connections between plate, planet, people, politics and culture.
Philosophy[edit]
The philosophy of Slow Food is encapsulated in a manifesto, first issued in 1989, and an international charter. The philosophy of Slow Food is that food should be produced in a way that respects the environment, the people who produce the food, and the cultural traditions associated with it.
Activities[edit]
Slow Food organizes events and campaigns, awards prizes to food producers, and works on a variety of projects to promote food biodiversity.
Slow Food International[edit]
Slow Food International is a non-profit organization, promoting local food and traditional cooking. It was founded by Carlo Petrini in Italy in 1986 and has since spread worldwide.
