Steam Whistle Brewing is a renowned brewery based in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. It is known for its singular focus on producing one brand of premium pilsner that is packaged in distinctive green bottles and a non-twist cap.
History[edit]
Steam Whistle Brewing was founded in 2000 by three friends, Greg Taylor, Cam Heaps, and Greg Cromwell, all former employees of another Canadian brewery, Upper Canada Brewing. The name "Steam Whistle" was inspired by the steam whistle that used to sound at the end of the day in factories across the country, signaling the time for workers to enjoy a well-earned break and a refreshing beer.
Location[edit]
The brewery is located in the historic John Street Roundhouse, a former Canadian Pacific Rail steam locomotive repair facility. The Roundhouse is a designated National Historic Site and its restoration has won several architectural awards.
Products[edit]
Steam Whistle Brewing produces a single beer, a premium pilsner lager that adheres to the standards of the Bavarian Purity Act of 1516. This means that the beer is made using only four ingredients: water, malted barley, hops, and yeast. The brewery prides itself on not using any preservatives, additives, or artificial carbonation in its brewing process.
Sustainability[edit]
Steam Whistle Brewing is committed to sustainability and has implemented several green initiatives. These include using green electricity and green natural gas, recycling or reusing almost all of its waste, and offering tours of its brewery to educate the public about its sustainable practices.
Events[edit]
The brewery hosts several events throughout the year, including its annual Oktoberfest celebration and the Roundhouse Craft Beer Festival. It also offers daily tours and tastings.
