Chris Marker (born Christian François Bouche-Villeneuve; 29 July 1921 – 29 July 2012) was a French filmmaker, writer, and multimedia artist. He is best known for his innovative use of the film medium, particularly in the genres of documentary and essay film. His most famous works include La Jetée (1962) and Sans Soleil (1983).
Early Life and Education[edit]
Chris Marker was born in Neuilly-sur-Seine, a suburb of Paris, France. He studied philosophy under Jean-Paul Sartre at the Sorbonne, which greatly influenced his intellectual and artistic development. During World War II, Marker joined the French Resistance, an experience that would later inform his political and artistic sensibilities.
