Jefferson County is a county located in the eastern part of the U.S. state of Ohio. As of the 2020 census, the population was 65,249. The county seat is Steubenville. The county was named for Thomas Jefferson, who was Vice President at the time of its creation.

History[edit]

Jefferson County was formed on July 29, 1797, from part of Washington County. It was named in honor of Thomas Jefferson, who was then serving as Vice President of the United States. The county has a rich history, particularly in the development of the steel industry, which played a significant role in its economic growth during the 19th and 20th centuries.

Geography[edit]

According to the United States Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 411 square miles (1,064 km²), of which 408 square miles (1,057 km²) is land and 3.0 square miles (7.8 km²) (0.7%) is water. The county is part of the Appalachian Plateau, characterized by rolling hills and valleys.

Adjacent counties[edit]

As of the 2020 census, there were 65,249 people, 27,000 households, and 17,000 families residing in the county. The population density was 160 people per square mile (62/km²). The racial makeup of the county was 90.5% White, 6.5% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.4% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.5% from other races, and 1.8% from two or more races. Historically, Jefferson County's economy was heavily reliant on the steel industry, with Steubenville being a major center for steel production. However, like many areas in the Rust Belt, the county has faced economic challenges due to the decline of manufacturing jobs.
