Milford Mills is an unincorporated community located in Chester County, Pennsylvania. It was once a thriving village but was largely submerged due to the creation of the Marsh Creek State Park and its associated reservoir.
History[edit]
Milford Mills was established in the early 19th century and became a small but vibrant community. The village included several homes, a mill, and a schoolhouse. The community was primarily agricultural, with local mills serving as the economic hub.
In the 1960s, the state of Pennsylvania initiated a project to create Marsh Creek State Park to address regional water needs and provide recreational opportunities. This project involved the construction of a large reservoir, which required the acquisition and subsequent flooding of the land where Milford Mills was located. By the early 1970s, the village was largely abandoned, and the area was submerged.
Geography[edit]
Milford Mills was situated in the northern part of Chester County, within the Brandywine Creek watershed. The area is characterized by rolling hills and fertile soil, typical of the Piedmont region of Pennsylvania.
Marsh Creek State Park[edit]
Marsh Creek State Park is a 1,705-acre park that includes the 535-acre Marsh Creek Lake. The park offers a variety of recreational activities, including boating, fishing, hiking, and bird watching. The creation of the park led to the displacement of the Milford Mills community, but it has since become a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts.
Legacy[edit]
Although Milford Mills no longer exists as a populated community, its history is preserved through local historical societies and the memories of former residents. Artifacts and remnants of the village can still be found in the area surrounding Marsh Creek State Park.
