Zwack was first produced in 1790 by [[József Zwack]], the royal physician to Emperor [[Joseph II]]. The emperor was reportedly so pleased with the drink that he declared, "Dr. Zwack, das ist ein Unicum!" (Dr. Zwack, this is unique!). This led to the drink being known as Unicum.<br />

During [[World War II]], the Zwack family fled Hungary and the factory was destroyed. The family returned in 1988 and rebuilt the factory, resuming production of the original recipe.<br />
