The proposal for a college in West Texas began in 1916, with the Texas legislature passing a bill in 1923 to establish Texas Technological College. The school opened in 1925 with six buildings and an enrollment of 914 students. It became Texas Tech University in 1969 to reflect the growth in the range and depth of its academic offerings and research pursuits.&lt;br /&gt;
