The '''Nobel Prize''' is a set of prestigious international awards given annually in several categories. They are established by the will of [[Alfred Nobel]], the inventor of dynamite. The prizes were first awarded in 1901. The prizes are awarded for achievements in physics, chemistry, physiology or medicine, literature, and for work in peace.

== History ==

The Nobel Prizes were established by the 1895 will of [[Alfred Nobel]], which dictates that the awards should be given to those who "during the preceding year, have conferred the greatest benefit to mankind". Nobel held 355 different patents, dynamite being the most famous. He used his fortune to posthumously institute the Nobel Prizes.
