'''Lyman Beecher''' (October 12, 1775 – January 10, 1863) was a prominent [[Presbyterian]] minister, [[American Temperance Society|temperance]] advocate, and dedicated [[abolitionism|abolitionist]] in the United States. He was also the father of several noted figures in American history, including [[Harriet Beecher Stowe]], author of ''[[Uncle Tom's Cabin]]'', and [[Henry Ward Beecher]], a well-known preacher and social reformer.

==Early Life and Education==
Lyman Beecher was born in [[New Haven, Connecticut]] on October 12, 1775. He attended [[Yale College]], where he graduated in 1797. After graduation, he studied theology under the guidance of President [[Timothy Dwight IV|Timothy Dwight]] and was ordained as a Presbyterian minister in 1799.

==Career==
Beecher served as a minister in several churches, including the [[Litchfield Congregational Church]] in [[Litchfield, Connecticut]], and the [[Hanover Street Presbyterian Church]] in [[Boston, Massachusetts]]. He was known for his fiery sermons and strong stance against [[Unitarianism]] and [[religious liberalism]].

In 1826, Beecher became the president of [[Lane Theological Seminary]] in [[Cincinnati, Ohio]], where he served until 1850. During his tenure, he was a staunch advocate for the abolition of slavery and the promotion of temperance.

==Legacy==
Beecher's influence extended beyond his own lifetime through his children, many of whom became prominent figures in American history. His daughter Harriet Beecher Stowe's novel ''Uncle Tom's Cabin'' played a significant role in shaping public opinion on slavery in the years leading up to the [[American Civil War]].
