Julia Child was born Julia McWilliams on August 15, 1912. She grew up in a wealthy family in Pasadena, California, and attended Smith College in Massachusetts, where she studied history and worked for the college newspaper.
After college, Child worked for the Office of Strategic Services (OSS) during World War II, where she met her future husband, Paul Child. While stationed in Ceylon (now Sri Lanka), Julia and Paul developed an interest in food and cooking, which would eventually lead Julia to pursue a career in cooking.

After the war, Julia and Paul moved to Paris, where Julia enrolled in the famed cooking school, Le Cordon Bleu. She quickly developed a passion for French cuisine and began to experiment with new recipes and techniques.
In 1961, Child published her first cookbook, "Mastering the Art of French Cooking," which quickly became a bestseller. The book was co-authored with Simone Beck and Louisette Bertholle and included hundreds of classic French recipes, along with detailed instructions and illustrations.
Child went on to host several cooking shows on television, including "The French Chef" and "Julia Child & Company." She became a household name in the United States and was credited with introducing French cuisine to a wider audience.
