Its [[county seat]] is [[Mountain City, Tennessee|Mountain City]]. The county was established in 1836 and named after [[Thomas Johnson (Tennessee)|Thomas Johnson]], an early settler and state legislator.

According to the [[United States Census Bureau]], the county has a total area of 303 square miles (780 km²), of which 298 square miles (770 km²) is land and 5.1 square miles (13 km²) (1.7%) is water. The county is part of the [[Appalachian Mountains]] and features a rugged terrain with numerous mountains and valleys.
