==Structure==
The Golgi apparatus is a series of flattened, stacked pouches called cisternae, and is located in the cytoplasm near the [[Cell nucleus|cell nucleus]]. The number of 'Golgi bodies' in a cell varies according to its function.

==Function==
The primary function of the Golgi apparatus is to process and package the macromolecules such as proteins and lipids that are synthesized by the cell. It is particularly important in the processing of proteins for secretion. The Golgi apparatus forms a part of the [[Endomembrane system|endomembrane system]] of eukaryotic cells.

==Role in Disease==
Defects in the Golgi apparatus function can result in diseases, including [[Alzheimer's disease]], [[Parkinson's disease]], and other [[Neurodegenerative disease|neurodegenerative disorders]].
