This protein is also commonly known as &#039;&#039;&#039;Hypoxia-inducible factor 2 alpha&#039;&#039;&#039; (HIF-2α). It is a transcription factor involved in the body&#039;s response to low oxygen levels, or [[hypoxia]].<br /> <br /> == Function ==<br /> <br /> EPAS1 is a member of the [[PAS domain]] family of transcription factors. It is involved in the induction of genes regulated by oxygen, which is induced as oxygen levels fall. The encoded protein contains a basic-helix-loop-helix domain protein dimerization domain as well as a domain found in proteins in signal transduction pathways which respond to oxygen levels.<br /> <br /> EPAS1 plays an essential role in embryonic vascularization, tumor angiogenesis and pathophysiology of ischemic disease. It also plays a role in the regulation of [[oxygen]] homeostasis, and is involved in the adaptive response to hypoxic stress in the heart, lung and other tissues.<br /> <br /> == Clinical significance ==<br /> <br /> Mutations in the EPAS1 gene have been associated with [[Erythrocytosis]], a condition characterized by an excessive production of red blood cells.
