The region is a [[basin]] with entrances and exits that have undergone considerable water and wind erosion, creating a unique geological landscape. The valley's geography includes salt flats, sand dunes, badlands, valleys, canyons, and mountains. The highest point in Death Valley National Park is Telescope Peak in the Panamint Range, which has an elevation of 11,043 feet (3,366 m).

== Climate ==
Death Valley holds the record for the highest reliably recorded air temperature on Earth, 134 °F (56.7 °C) at Furnace Creek on July 10, 1913. Summers are extremely hot and dry, while winters are mild with occasional cold spells. The valley receives less than 2 inches (50 mm) of rain annually, making it one of the driest places in the United States.

== Flora and Fauna ==
Despite its harsh climate, Death Valley supports a variety of life adapted to its extreme environment. Vegetation is sparse and consists mainly of xerophytic plants, which have adapted to the arid conditions. Notable plant species include the Joshua tree, creosote bush, and various cacti. The valley is also home to wildlife such as the bighorn sheep, coyote, and the endangered Death Valley pupfish, which is found nowhere else in the world.

== Human History ==
The valley received its English name during the [[California Gold Rush]] of the 19th century, although it is believed that Native Americans inhabited the area for thousands of years before then. The Timbisha tribe, formerly known as the Panamint Shoshone, have lived in the Death Valley region for centuries. In the 1849 gold rush, a group of European Americans became trapped in the valley; all but one of their party survived, leading to the place's ominous name.

== Tourism and Recreation ==
Death Valley National Park was designated as a national monument in 1933 and became a national park in 1994. It attracts visitors from around the world who come to experience its unique natural features and landscapes. Popular activities include hiking, photography, star gazing, and visiting sites such as Furnace Creek, Badwater Basin, Zabriskie Point, and the Racetrack Playa.
