== History ==
Davidson County was created in 1783 by an act of the North Carolina legislature, which governed the area at the time. It was named in honor of [[William Lee Davidson]], a North Carolina general who died in the [[American Revolutionary War]]. The county was one of the first counties established in the region that would become the state of Tennessee.

According to the [[United States Census Bureau]], the county has a total area of 526 square miles (1,360 km²), of which 504 square miles (1,310 km²) is land and 22 square miles (57 km²) (4.2%) is water.

== Demographics ==
As of the 2020 census, there were 715,884 people, 301,000 households, and 165,000 families residing in the county. The population density was 1,420 people per square mile (548/km²). The racial makeup of the county was 63.5% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], 27.6% [[African American (U.S. Census)|Black or African American]], 3.5% [[Asian (U.S. Census)|Asian]], and 5.4% from other races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 10.4% of the population.

== Government ==
Davidson County operates under a consolidated city-county government with the [[City of Nashville]]. This unique arrangement, known as the [[Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County]], was established in 1963. The government is headed by a [[Mayor of Nashville|mayor]] and a [[Metropolitan Council (Nashville)|metropolitan council]].

Davidson County is served by the [[Metropolitan Nashville Public Schools]] system, which operates numerous elementary, middle, and high schools throughout the county.
