== History ==
Cocke County was created in 1797 from a part of [[Jefferson County, Tennessee|Jefferson County]]. The county was named in honor of [[William Cocke]], a Revolutionary War veteran and one of the first U.S. Senators from Tennessee. The area was originally inhabited by the [[Cherokee]] people before European settlers arrived.

According to the [[United States Census Bureau]], the county has a total area of 443 square miles (1,150 km²), of which 435 square miles (1,130 km²) is land and 8.0 square miles (21 km²) (1.8%) is water.
