The '''Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor''' is an award presented annually by the [[Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences]] (AMPAS). It is given in honor of an actor who has delivered an outstanding performance in a supporting role while working within the film industry. The award was first presented at the 9th Academy Awards ceremony, held in 1937, for performances in films released in 1936.

== History ==
The category was created following the establishment of the [[Academy Award for Best Actor]] and [[Academy Award for Best Actress]] categories. The first recipient was [[Walter Brennan]], who won for his role in "Come and Get It" (1936). Brennan went on to win the award three times, a record in this category.

== Criteria and Selection Process ==
The nominees for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor are selected by the members of the [[Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences|Academy's]] Actors Branch. The winners are chosen by the entire membership of the Academy. The award is traditionally presented by the previous year's Best Supporting Actress winner.
