The vagina is a muscular and tubular part of the female genital tract that extends from the vulva to the cervix. It is an essential component of the female reproductive system and plays a crucial role in sexual intercourse, menstruation, and childbirth. === Anatomy === The vagina is approximately 7.5 to 10 cm (3 to 4 inches) in length and is located between the bladder and the rectum. The vaginal walls are composed of three layers: the inner mucosal layer, the middle muscular layer, and the outer fibrous layer. The inner mucosal layer is lined with stratified squamous epithelium, which provides protection and lubrication. === Functions === The vagina serves several important functions: * Sexual intercourse: During sexual arousal, the vagina becomes lubricated to facilitate penetration and sexual intercourse. * Menstruation: The vagina allows for the passage of menstrual blood from the uterus to the outside of the body. * Childbirth: During labor, the vagina expands to allow for the passage of the baby from the uterus to the outside world. === Microbiota === The vaginal environment is home to a diverse community of microorganisms, collectively known as the vaginal microbiota. The most predominant bacteria are from the genus Lactobacillus, which help maintain an acidic pH and protect against infections. === Health and Diseases === Several conditions can affect the vagina, including: * Vaginitis: Inflammation of the vagina, often caused by infections such as bacterial vaginosis, yeast infection, or trichomoniasis. * Vaginal atrophy: Thinning and drying of the vaginal walls, commonly occurring after menopause. * Vaginal cancer: A rare type of cancer that forms in the tissues of the vagina. === Cultural and Social Aspects === The vagina has significant cultural and social implications. It is often a subject of taboo and stigma in many societies, which can impact sexual health education and women's health. === See Also === * Female reproductive system * Vulva * Cervix * Menstruation * Childbirth * Sexual intercourse Reproductive system medicine-stub
