Saline is a solution of sodium chloride (NaCl) in water and has several uses in medicine. It is often used for intravenous therapy, for cleaning wounds, for nasal irrigation, and often in combination with other medications. ==Composition== Saline solution for medical purposes is typically a 0.9% solution of NaCl, about the same as the sodium concentration in blood and tears. Saline solution is available in various formats including sterile solutions and packets for oral rehydration. ==Uses== ===Intravenous therapy=== Saline is used in intravenous drips (IVs) for patients who cannot take fluids orally and are at risk of developing dehydration. Saline is also often used for patients who are dehydrated and for those who are suffering from diarrhea. ===Wound cleaning=== Saline is also used to clean wounds, to help remove debris and to prevent infection. ===Nasal irrigation=== Saline solution is used for nasal irrigation to relieve nasal congestion. The solution is typically applied using a neti pot. ==See also== * Intravenous therapy * Sodium chloride * Water stub
