Novel is a long, fictional narrative which describes intimate human experiences. The novel in the modern era usually makes use of a literary prose style. The development of the prose novel at this time was encouraged by innovations in printing, and the introduction of cheap paper in the 15th century. A fictional narrative, the novel differs from a short story because the latter might be any narrative that is shorter than a novel, such as a news item, a joke, a legend, or a folktale. Novels are classified according to content, which includes realism, romanticism, modernism, and postmodernism. ==History== The novel is a modern phenomenon that developed in tandem with the growth of the middle class and the novel's readership. The novel's modern form arose from the social and cultural upheavals that took place in Europe and America in the 18th and 19th centuries. ==Types of Novels== There are many types of novels, including but not limited to, the historical novel, the epistolary novel, the gothic novel, the psychological novel, and the graphic novel. ==See Also== * Literature * Fiction * Short story * Novella ==References== <references /> stub dictionary-stub1 <gallery> File:Madame de Pompadour.jpg|Madame de Pompadour File:Tosa Mitsuoki—Portrait of Murasaki Shikibu.jpg|Portrait of Murasaki Shikibu File:WUL-he21 02761 遊仙窟.pdf|遊仙窟 File:Chaucer Troilus frontispiece.jpg|Chaucer Troilus frontispiece File:1474 Melusine Ausgabe Augsburg Johann Bämler Blatt 2.png|Melusine Ausgabe Augsburg File:Richard Head 1666.png|Richard Head 1666 File:1719-heathcot-robinson-crusoe.png|Robinson Crusoe File:1769 Laurence Sterne Tristram Shandy v6 p70.jpg|Tristram Shandy File:Richardson pamela 1741.jpg|Pamela File:1711 The Court and City Vagaries.jpg|The Court and City Vagaries File:Walter Scott Waverley illustration (Pettie-Huth).jpg|Waverley illustration File:Seitseman veljekset.jpg|Seitseman veljekset </gallery>
