Dance is a performing art form consisting of purposefully selected sequences of human movement. This movement has aesthetic and symbolic value, and is acknowledged as dance by performers and observers within a particular culture. Dance can be categorized and described by its choreography, by its repertoire of movements, or by its historical period or place of origin. == History of Dance == An important distinction is to be drawn between the contexts of theatrical and participatory dance, although these two categories are not always completely separate; both may have special functions, whether social, ceremonial, competitive, erotic, martial, or sacred/liturgical. Other forms of human movement are sometimes said to have a dance-like quality, including martial arts, gymnastics, figure skating, synchronized swimming, marching bands, and many other forms of athletics. == Types of Dance == There are many styles and genres of dance. African dance is interpretative. Ballet, ballroom and tango are classical dance styles. Square dance and electric slide are forms of step dance, and breakdancing is a type of street dance. Dance can be participatory, social, or performed for an audience. It can also be ceremonial, competitive or erotic. Dance movements may be without significance in themselves, as in ballet or European folk dance, or have a gestural vocabulary or symbolic meaning as in some Asian dances. == Health Benefits of Dance == Dance is an enjoyable health promoting physical activity which many people worldwide incorporate into their lifestyles today. This physical activity appeals to some who may not be attracted to other forms of exercise. Dance for health has become an important factor in the prevention, treatment and management in several health circumstances. It is not only significant for your physical health but it also contributes to your mental health and promotes a general feeling of well-being. == See Also == * Ballet * Modern Dance * Contemporary Dance * Hip Hop Dance * Folk Dance * Ballroom Dance == References == <references /> stub <gallery> File:Two_dancers.jpg|Two dancers File:GDC_onlywayaround.jpg|GDC only way around File:Dancing_painting_at_Bhimbetka.jpg|Dancing painting at Bhimbetka File:Dancers_and_musicians_on_a_Sasanian_bowl.jpg|Dancers and musicians on a Sasanian bowl File:Bronze_Statuette_of_a_Veiled_and_Masked_Dancer_1.jpg|Bronze Statuette of a Veiled and Masked Dancer File:Dancing_girls_in_concert.jpg|Dancing girls in concert File:Tango_rhythm.svg|Tango rhythm File:Lululaund_-_The_Dancing_Girl_(painting_and_silk_cloth._A.L._Baldry_1901,_before_p.107).jpg|Lululaund - The Dancing Girl File:Dancing_with_Helen_Moller;_her_own_statement_of_her_philosophy_and_practice_and_teaching_formed_upon_the_classic_Greek_model,_and_adapted_to_meet_the_aesthetic_and_hygienic_needs_of_to-day,_with_(14784705065).jpg|Dancing with Helen Moller File:La_Valse.jpg|La Valse File:Dinastia_tang,_due_danzatrici,_cina_del_nord,_650_ca..JPG|Dinastia tang, due danzatrici, cina del nord, 650 ca. </gallery>
