CDH15 is a gene that in humans encodes the cadherin 15 protein, also known as M-cadherin. This protein is a type of cadherin, which are calcium-dependent cell adhesion proteins. They play important roles in cell-cell adhesion, ensuring that cells within tissues are bound together. == Function == The CDH15 gene is a member of the cadherin superfamily. The encoded protein, M-cadherin, is a calcium-dependent cell-cell adhesion glycoprotein comprised of five extracellular cadherin repeats, a transmembrane region and a highly conserved cytoplasmic tail. This gene is located in a six-cadherin cluster in a region on the long arm of chromosome 16 that is involved in loss of heterozygosity events in breast and prostate cancer. == Clinical significance == Mutations in the CDH15 gene have been associated with congenital heart disease and autism spectrum disorder. In addition, the gene has been implicated in certain types of cancer, including breast cancer and prostate cancer. == See also == * Cadherin * Congenital heart disease * Autism spectrum disorder * Breast cancer * Prostate cancer == References == <references /> == External links == * CDH15 at the National Center for Biotechnology Information stub No image __NOINDEX__
