Femoral nerve stretch test
Femoral Nerve Stretch Test[edit]
The Femoral Nerve Stretch Test is a clinical examination procedure used to assess the integrity and function of the femoral nerve. This test is particularly useful in diagnosing conditions related to nerve compression or irritation, such as lumbar disc herniation or spinal stenosis.
Procedure[edit]
To perform the Femoral Nerve Stretch Test, the patient is typically positioned in the prone position (lying face down). The examiner then gently extends the patient's hip while keeping the knee flexed. This maneuver stretches the femoral nerve and may reproduce symptoms of pain or discomfort if the nerve is compromised.
Steps[edit]
1. Position the patient in the prone position on an examination table. 2. Flex the patient's knee to approximately 90 degrees. 3. Slowly extend the hip by lifting the thigh off the table. 4. Observe for any reproduction of pain or discomfort along the anterior thigh, which may indicate femoral nerve involvement.
Interpretation[edit]
A positive Femoral Nerve Stretch Test is indicated by the reproduction of pain or paresthesia along the distribution of the femoral nerve, typically in the anterior thigh region. This may suggest nerve root compression at the level of L2, L3, or L4 in the lumbar spine.
Clinical Significance[edit]
The Femoral Nerve Stretch Test is an important diagnostic tool in the assessment of patients with suspected lumbar radiculopathy. It helps differentiate between nerve root compression and other causes of anterior thigh pain. This test is often used in conjunction with other clinical assessments and imaging studies to confirm a diagnosis.
